The Interview
Qualifications required were University degree and 2 years experience. Salary was dependent on experience. Duties included answering phones, filing, customer service and data input. With the skills and experience required I believed this was going to be a relatively good paying job. Say in the 30k/year area. I refer to the employer as EM.
EM: So, Mr. Braids, what do you think?
Me: I think I could fit in well here and I don't see any problems that would prevent me from quickly learning the routine.
EM: Great! Can you start next Monday?
Me: I can start right now if you want. Heh heh.
EM: Heh heh. Monday will be fine. We start at 8:30.
Me: Sounds great! Not that money is a real issue, but I was wondering what my wage would be.
EM: Well, we will start you off at $9.00/hr and after three months you will automatically get a raise.
Me: I see. And after three months the raise would be how much?
EM: Well, usually it is a full $.50 raise, but we can talk about that when the time arises.
Me: Oh hmmm. So you desired a University Degree for this job?
EM: Well, obviously it wasn't the most important issue since you haven't completed your degree, but you did indicate to us you would be finishing your degree at night school and you do offer the kind of experience we were looking for.
Me: Thats wonderful. Did you get a lot of applicants with degrees?
EM: Oh yes. We got a few.
Me: Sorry to go on, but I am just trying to understand this. You are going to pay me $9.00/hr based on my education and experience?
EM: Yes. That's correct.
Me: Well, after I pay for daycare that should leave me making about $1.50 an hour so I really hope I get that full $.50 raise after three months.
EM: I am sure we can work something out.
Me: I was being sarcastic.

don't you hate it when you have to explain that you are being sarcastic?
Jesus flippin' H man - $9.00 and hour and the audactiy to ask for education and experience.
Well, I know its my answer to every thing -but a good punch in face would have been in order.
You can hear me under a cloak of darkness on Wednesdays while wearing a mint green bonnet say that the MA is the new BA. And in 10 years a PhD will be the new MA.
I like to get the word out on trends. :)
What I don't understand is why employers want university degrees if they are not going to use them. Like what ever happened to specializing? Never mind what ever happened to demi-specializing?
My employer wants a degree; they'll only take people with degrees now-some new policy. Yet they won't pay to keep these people when some call center gig antes up better wages.
GAWD! That makes me frak'in crazy!
Krista, it took all the diplomacy I could muster to not to be louder and more vulgar. I truly wanted to punch the guy in the face for wasting my time. Can I call you if this happens again? Can I count on you to throw a few for old times sake? I mean it's not like these people don't deserve it.
Queen, speaking of trendy; mint green bonnet. I mean that's just hot. No wonder you have such a loyal following. Your point about degrees is accurate. It's like the Universities are in cahoots with corporations and government to force us to jump more hoops at our own cost to get these jobs you can't raise a family on. I would really like to form a group of like minded people who are fed up with our shrinking quality of life.
I laid in bed last night after a rousing hump, so you know my mind was REALLY relaxed and tried to come up with some "what if's." Like what if companies paid $9 an hour but paid for 2 weeks holidays a year and I'm not talking about vacation pay, I'm talking about the company actually handing over 2 weeks worth of pay out of THEIR pocket. Would the $9 bucks seem like something that I would be able to swallow better? Or what if THEY paid for medical coverage? OR what if a person had ALL the benefits/perks of someone who was making $100,000 a year but only got $9 bucks and hour? Would that make it more palatable?
I think I would like to join this group your going to start... and now that I think about it, I think this might actually be a good job for you. Lobbist. Job consultant. Dude who makes things happen.
Mint green bonnet = rousing hump. Like I said, the bonnet is sexy and a great icebreaker.
Even with the paid holiday I would take 40K/yr over $9.00/hr. What kind of holiday are you going to have for $400.00 a week? I see this as a global issue with many facets to it. The underlying factor tying all things together is the lack of morality involded. I have seriously thought about getting involved heavily into this issue because I did not want life to pass me by without at least trying to make positive changes. It is just a matter of believing that I am not completely helpless/useless in bringing about change.
Troubles - you can count on me brother...at the sixth month of pregnancy I think I'm almost welter weight and can back quite a left hook. All I need is a picture and an address.
Queen, I couldn't agree more about the flavour of the month accreditations.
My work experience has been mostly in the not for profit world (15years) and in that line you are at the top end if you reach 45/yr. What is interesting however is that there are excellent benefits to be had and the last co. I worked for gave 5 wks paid vacation. But, interesting that that sector has now bowed to the "I want you to have a MSW but I don't want to compensate you for bringing that knowledge to the workplace."
Hey what's the difference between an artist and a large pizza?
A large pizza can feed a family of four. (ba dump dump)
This makes me want to cry and yell. Minimum wage is 8 bucks an hour. You know, what they pay 15 year-olds. Tim Horton's probably pays more than 9 bucks an hour and these assheads want a degree? Just who do they think they are? That's fucked up and sad. XOX
I think there was some group of crazy business type men and one day while they were sitting around in thier 500 doller power suits said to each other "Hey you know what would be a good idea? Lets screw all those people who give 4 years of their lives to getting a degree lower wages. This way instead of haviing to out souce to 3 world countries we could just pay them crappy wages. That way we won't have to go to all of that trouble of filling out those international papers. Yah and hey I bet if we told enough of our 500 power suit friends this would catch on. We'll save MILLIONS! Muhahahahahahahahaha." And then they wiped the fras gras from their chin and went back to their corner offices and called it a day.
And you know what makes me even crazier? The people who have philosophy degrees are no longer the butt of all jokes. It doesn't matter what your degree is, everyone is welcome at the taxi stand to apply for a job. Grrr!
The conspiracy of the suit people. Fear is a powerful tool especially when you threaten to move a towns livelihood to another country. Multi-nationals continue to manipulate local governments into giving them land and low taxes (if any) to entice them into building new factories. They continue to weaken unions (or corrupt them) in order to pay less wages and/or benefits. People have become way too pliant to the whims of big business. If I were in the government I would make a stand against big business. If they didn't play ball with us I would get the country to boycott all their products.
The problem to me in my vast intelligence is that degree and experience are not seen equally, as they should be. A degree is mostly theory, sure but is stil *work* done and goes on a resume. Same with other experience, whether it is directly job-related or saving the world in your spare time. It takes a lot of frelling work to be a human being -- we shouldn't be paid according to degrees (which, it could be argued are expensive pieces of paper to hang on your wall that one spends countless years of their lives acquiring). Rather, it should all be relative. Haaaa....Imagine that? People placed in jobs according to fit. CRAZY...
